Justice (Retd.) Amir Alam Khan gave fifty years to the law, and at every step it was his own profession that chose him: Secretary and then President of the Lahore District Bar, member of the Punjab Bar Council, and President of the Lahore High Court Bar Association, the largest and most storied bar in Pakistan. On 7 August 1994, months after that final election, he was elevated to the Bench of the Lahore High Court. In a single year he was chosen first by the lawyers who argued against him, and then by the institution they all served.

He served the Court for eight years, through one of the most turbulent constitutional decades in Pakistan's history, sitting also as a special Corporate Judge, trusted with the commercial disputes that demand both technical command and absolute probity. He retired as a Senior Judge on 23 December 2001. The court's own register remembers him the way the profession did: as a renowned civil lawyer in whose chambers future judges were trained.

Those who appeared before him remember the man as much as the judge. Soft-spoken in a profession of raised voices, unfailingly kind, and known for putting others before himself, he never needed to raise his voice to be heard. His sense of duty reached far past the bench, to the institutions that hold a society together: the Boards of Governors of King Edward Medical College and the University of Engineering & Technology, the Boards of Lady Willingdon and Lady Aitchison Hospitals, the honorary faculties of several law colleges, the Chairmanship of the Pakistan Cricket Board's Disciplinary Committee, and the honorary Chair of the Lifeline Health Welfare Organization. Medicine, education, sport and public welfare, all of it served without office or reward.

Retirement was not a conclusion. He presided over international and domestic arbitrations, the work parties bring only to judges whose fairness both sides will accept, and he founded this firm, building it as he had built his chambers decades earlier: as a place where fine lawyers are made. He remained a Life Member of the Lahore Bar Association, the High Court Bar Association and the Supreme Court Bar Association to the end.

He passed away on 28 January 2016, and the respect has outlived him: nearly a decade on, lawyers and judges still speak of his conduct in and outside the court. In a profession with a long and unsentimental memory, that is the rarest verdict of all: not that he was important, but that he was good. The values he set down remain the firm's foundation: integrity, fairness, tenacity and stewardship.
